Yarram prepares for Governor’s visit
Issued:
April 27, 2021

The Yarram community is preparing for a visit from Her Excellency The Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria, and Mr Anthony Howard AM QC, on Thursday.

The Governor and Mr Howard will, over two days, visit various sites in Yarram and surrounds, but the Governor’s most notable task will be to unveil a new mural painted by Mongolian-born Melbourne artist Heesco Khosnaran.

Yarram’s Heesco Town art project has resulted in a series of 10 prominent murals, which have attracted national and international news coverage and drawn tourists to the area.

The new Heesco work to be unveiled was commissioned by the Governor and expresses the gratitude to the frontline workers who in recent times have battled catastrophic bushfires and the COVID-19 global pandemic.

After being on display in Melbourne, the mural has now been relocated and installed permanently at the Yarram Memorial gardens near the front gate.

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Garry Stephens said the Governor’s visit would be a boost to the Yarram community and due recognition to the group of locals known as Friends of Heesco Town.

“Having the Governor of Victoria visit Yarram is indeed an honour,” he said.

“It is also great recognition for the work of Friends of Heesco Town, for the work they have done to facilitate the murals throughout Yarram and create a reason for tourists to visit and see the amazing artworks.”

Following the official unveiling of the new mural, the Governor will be taken on a walking tour of the 10 other murals in Yarram.
