Your Waste Is Changing

The state government is standardising household recycling across Victoria. This includes the introduction of a four-bin waste and recycling system. This is part of the states obligation under the new Circular Economy (Waste Reduction and Recycling) Act 2021. A "service standard” will set the benchmark for all councils across Victoria.

The Service Standard is still being finalised.

Households that receive waste and recycling services from local councils will have access to a new standardised four stream system with separate services for:

The new Service Standard will also outline type of waste that can go into each bin, so that all council areas are the same across all of Victoria. The transition to this new system is underway.

Important information regarding your kerbside bin collection service

We are planning for significant changes to the waste collection service in Wellington Shire over the next few years. As part of this, new black-bodied bins replaced all rubbish and recycling bins across the Shire during January and February 2024. FOGO bins were rolled out across Wellington Shire during May and June 2026, with collection to begin from 6 July 2026. The change standardised bin lid colour across all households with kerbside collection, aligning with Victoria’s recycling policy.
