About Lost Animals and Pets

The Domestic Animals Act 1994 requires owners to ensure their cats and dogs are controlled when in public and contained when at home.

  • Wherever possible, stray animals collected by Council Officers that are currently microchipped and registered will be returned to their owners if it is the first recorded instance of straying.
  • Wherever possible, stray animals collected by Council Officers that are currently microchipped and registered will be returned to their owners and a verbal or official warning issued on the second recorded instance of straying.
  • Stray animals collected by a Council Officer, with a recorded history of straying on more than two previous occasions will be taken to the Wellington Shire Council Pound and Animal Aid Shelter and an infringement notice may be issued to the owner. A release fee will also be required for their retrieval. If you have lost an animal or pet, please contact the pound.
