Sale Library goes DIY
Issued:
June 8, 2017

Library borrowers are now able to check out their own books after Sale Library installed a new self-checkout library system.

Since it was installed a couple of weeks ago, staff have assisted over 200 library borrowers to test and self-checkout their items with the brand new Bibliotheca 3M self-checkout machine. Borrowers scan their library card and the existing barcode on each book, just the same as staff do.

Patrons can check their current loans and renew via the touch screen. The new checkout system can email library loan receipts if a borrower prefers that to printing. The screen will advise users of library events and programs.

Wellington Shire Mayor Carolyn Crossley says, “Patrons love the speed and convenience of undertaking their own library transactions using self-serve kiosks. No longer do people need to wait in queues. They can take care of their own library needs quickly and efficiently, and with a sense of independence and privacy.

“Most people are good to go after a quick explanation and feel confident to go solo on their next visit. Staff are always readily available to help and discuss any of our library services,” added Mayor Crossley.

As Wellington Shire grows, the need to expand library services will continue to rise. The new self-checkout unit, not only increases staff availability, it also enables staff to deliver more services. This new system is a creative and functional way to serve the public. This unit and two other will be installed at the new Wellington Centre later this year.
