Pet registration fees on the horizon!
Issued:
April 4, 2017

Wellington Shire Council would like to remind pet owners that all dogs or cats over three months old are required to be registered as a requirement of the Victorian Domestic Animals Act 1994.

Annual pet registrations for existing registered pets within Wellington Shire are due to expire on Monday 10 April 2017. Registration renewals for 2017/2018 have been mailed to all registered pet owners.

Wherever possible, Wellington Shire Council local laws officers will attempt to return registered pets home the first time they are found wandering. If cats and dogs are not microchipped or registered, it makes reuniting them with their families impossible.

“If pets are unable to be reunited straight away with their owners, they are taken to Council’s animal shelter, run by not for profit group Animal Aid,” says Wellington Shire Council Mayor Carolyn Crossley.

“It is a legal requirement that cats and dogs are microchipped and registered with your local Council. If you are moving into the Shire from another municipality your dog or cat is required to be registered with Wellington Shire Council. By registering with Council, it allows us to update the animal’s details to the new address.”

Pet registration fees contribute to the running of the Animal Aid shelter which is made up mostly by volunteers. In 2016, 738 animals were cared for at the Animal Aid shelter with over 80% of pets reunited with their owner. Those not collected were placed for adoption.

The fees also fund education and resources to assist with pet related complaints, dangerous and restricted breed dog management, emergency relief equipment, facilities and compliance.

A standard pet registration fee is $120, there are also reduced fees and pension concessions available. More information on the costs and how your registration fees are used is available www.wellington.vic.gov.au/Living-in-Wellington/Animals-and-Pets/Animal-Registration.

You can register your pet by contacting Council’s Customer Service team on 1300 366 244, or by calling in to Council’s Service Centres in Sale or Yarram.
