Wellington Shire Council has completed blackberry-control works on roadsides in the Macalister Irrigation District and Dargo areas that it carried out over summer and autumn as part of the ongoing Roadside Weed Control Program.

Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus aggregate) is a highly invasive introduced species which threatens agricultural and environmental values in the region.

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Garry Stephens said Council has an extensive blackberry-control program and is working closely with partner agencies to control this weed on roadsides within the shire.

“Wellington is the third-largest shire in Victoria, with around 3,000km of roadside. As blackberry is prevalent throughout the shire, working with partner agencies and private landowners is the only way to combat this weed,” Cr Stephens said.

Roadside blackberry control is being implemented in accordance with Wellington Shire Council’s Roadside Weeds and Pests Program Control Plan.
