Community events, projects and facilities win grants
Issued:
May 5, 2021

A boundary fence at Meerlieu Cricket Club, new horse yards at Yarram Equestrian facility and improved accessibility at Rosedale RSL are among some of the projects Wellington Shire Council has funded in its first round of Community Assistance Grants for 2021.

Grants totalling $44,885 went to 10 groups, spanning community events, projects and facilities, and come as large sporting and social gatherings are gradually permitted under eased Covid-19 rules.

“After a year of lockdown, it’s great to see sports and community clubs back on their feet again and offering locals an even better experience,” Wellington Shire Council Mayor Garry Stephens said.

Facilities grants ranged from $2,390 for new safety and security measures at Seaspray Surf Life Saving Club to $5,000 granted to a range of groups, including Loch Sport Bowls Club, which fitted its roof with solar panels to lower costs to the club, and Maffra Golf Club which constructed a 20-bay shed for its golf carts. Macalister Trophy Bowhunters won a project grant of $5,000 for new three-dimensional targets (a 3D game animal target instead of a round target with a bullseye).

All of the successful Community Assistance Grants Scheme applicants offered initiatives in line with Council’s Wellington 2030 Strategic Vision and Council Plan.
