West Sale Airport has been recognised as Australia’s Small Regional Aerodrome of the Year at the Australian Airports Association (AAA) National Airport Industry Awards.

The awards form part of the AAA National Conference, which is the largest airport event in Australia.

West Sale Airport has recently undergone extensive improvements to cement its place as a key player in Victorian aviation.

A $6 million runway extension and lighting upgrade elevated the airport to the standard required for the RAAF Air Academy to use the facilities as part of its new Pilot Training System.

TAFE Gippsland has also recently announced an expansion to its aeroskills courses which includes a relocation of its avionics training to the campus at the West Sale Airport.

Wellington Shire Council is also working to promote West Sale as an attractive investment opportunity.

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Alan Hall said the Australian Airports Association award was confirmation that the facility was a valuable resource to the aviation industry and had further potential.

“These awards celebrate excellence within Australia’s airport industry,” he said.

“West Sale Airport is quickly establishing itself as the centre for aviation education and a centre ripe for investment.

“The future is bright for West Sale and Council is thrilled the facility has been recognised on a national level.”
