West Sale Airport Master Plan Update

State Government announced $5 million of funding to upgrade the main runway and complete associated infrastructure improvements at West Sale Airport.
Issued:
April 27, 2017

In January 2017, the State Government announced $5 million of funding to upgrade the main runway and complete associated infrastructure improvements at West Sale Airport.

As significant changes are proposed to the existing West Sale Airport infrastructure, there is a requirement to update the existing West Sale Airport Master Plan. As a result, Wellington Shire Council at its meeting on Tuesday 2 May, will consider a recommendation to release the draft West Sale Airport Master Plan 2017 for public consultation.

The draft plan follows a new format that aligns with the Australian Airports Association’s Regional Airports Master Plan template, provides data on aircraft movements and includes plans on the proposed runway extension and Eastern Recreational Aviation Precinct freehold development. Work has also been completed to produce a long range Australian Noise Exposure Forecast (ANEF) that is useful in describing noise.

Extending the runway from 1500m to 1800m will support Air Force pilot training in addition to providing greater opportunities for other types of aircraft to access the airport.

After Council adopts the final West Sale Airport Master Plan 2017, following the consultation period, a planning scheme amendment will be required for the runway extension. The planning scheme amendment will be presented to Council at a later date for consideration.
