Time to revise pool and spa safety
Issued:
October 25, 2019

With the weather warming up, Wellington Shire Council is reminding residents to check the safety of their pools and spas.

Council is about to begin its annual swimming pool safety program, which involves Building Inspectors visiting some properties to ensure swimming pool and spa barriers are safe and compliant.

Wellington Shire Council’s General Manager Development John Websdale said now was the perfect time to check pools and spas comply with building regulations.

“Spring is here and while we are preparing for the warmer months we should also be checking the safety of pools and spas,” Mr Websdale said.

“The two most important measures to prevent drowning are compliant barriers around the pool or spa and constant supervision of children.

“If you own a pool or spa the building regulations place responsibility on you, even if you are a tenant in a rental property, to make sure that barriers are in place to restrict children from entering the pool area.

“If children are in the pool area, make sure that there is constant adult supervision and if that adult is to leave the pool area the children should leave with the adult.”

If you are aware of a pool that has no barrier or may not comply please contact Council and the matter will be treated in strict confidence.

Council’s role is to protect our community particularly the younger members of our community.

For further information or if you wish to request an inspection please call the Council on 1300 366 244.
