No-Fee Green Waste Disposal returns

Wellington Shire Council is urging residents to prepare ahead of the upcoming fire season, with No-Fee Green Waste Disposal returning from Saturday 17 October to Sunday 15 November 2026 to help property owners reduce fire risks around their homes. The program is particularly important for coastal and high-risk communities.

To support community fire preparedness efforts, residents can dispose of eligible green waste free of charge at its waste facilities in Heyfield, Kilmany, Loch Sport, Maffra, Seaspray, Stratford and Yarram. Dargo Transfer Station is excluded as it cannot process green waste.  

Recognising the higher bushfire risk faced by coastal communities and the demand for the service, the Loch Sport Transfer Station will again offer an extended disposal period, operating from Saturday 17 October until Monday 30 November 2026.

To further support residents preparing their properties, the Loch Sport facility will also extend its opening hours across the Melbourne Cup long weekend, operating from 9am to 5pm from Friday 30 October to Monday 2 November.

Residents are encouraged to reduce fire hazards by slashing grass, bracken or weeds, especially around buildings and fences. Undergrowth, fallen branches and tree cuttings should be removed, while tree branches and shrubs should also be pruned. The disposal of timber (raw, painted or with metal attached), manufactured boards, treated timbers and stumps will not be accepted at any waste facility.

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Cr Cindy Madeley said the recent bushfire in Seacombe highlighted the importance of preparing early.

“The first bushfire of the season is a reminder that fire preparedness is not something to put off until summer arrives.”

“Taking the time to clear grass, branches and other vegetation from around your property now can significantly reduce fire risk and improve safety for your family, neighbours and emergency services.”

While Council recognises that many local contractors and businesses play a key role in helping people prepare for fire season, this program is specifically for residents and property owners. Commercial loads still attract standard gate fees.

Property owners must apply for a permit to burn off during the Fire Danger Period via the Country Fire Authority (CFA). Outside this time, property owners may apply for a permit to burn through Council’s website. Permits will only be issued where there is no alternative to burning.

Victoria Police will actively investigate burning off in the Fire Danger Period, and heavy fines may be imposed on any person burning off without a permit.
