Wellington Shire Council is inviting community members, airport users and stakeholders to provide feedback on the Draft West Sale Airport Master Plan which sets out a long‑term vision for the future of one of the Shire’s most significant strategic assets.

Council is progressing a new 20-year Master Plan for West Sale Airport, replacing an outdated plan last comprehensively updated in the mid-1990s. Since that time, aviation activity at the airport has increased significantly, including growth in defence training, aeromedical services and general aviation operations. It is also home to the biannual ANZAC Airshow - a major tourism event for regional Victoria and The Middle of Everywhere.

West Sale Airport is one of Wellington Shire Council’s largest single assets and a strategically important piece of infrastructure supporting defence pilot training, aviation businesses, emergency services and regional economic development.

Wellington Shire Council Mayor Cr Cindy Madeley said the Draft Master Plan would provide a clear framework to guide future investment and advocacy.

“West Sale Airport plays a vital role in supporting defence operations, emergency services and local jobs, and it is an asset of regional significance,” Cr Madeley said.

“This plan sets out a long‑term framework to ensure the airport can continue to operate safely, efficiently and sustainably, while also supporting future growth opportunities for our community.”

The Draft Master Plan builds on the first stage of community and stakeholder engagement, which commenced in June 2025. Feedback received during this stage highlighted the importance of balancing aviation growth with safety, surrounding land-use compatibility, infrastructure planning and long‑term economic opportunities for the region. These insights have helped shape the document now released for public comment.

Community and stakeholder feedback is critical to ensuring the plan reflects both operational requirements and the expectations of the wider community, and Council is encouraging anyone with an interest in the future of West Sale Airport to review the draft and share their feedback.

Community engagement is open until Wednesday 5 August 2026.

Feedback can be provided via Council’s Your Wellington Your Say platform, with all submissions carefully considered before the Draft Master Plan is finalised and presented to Council.
