Wellington Shire Council's vision is for happy people, healthy environment and thriving communities.
After Hours Emergency
1300 366 244Council understands the closure will impact 73 employees - many of whom have dedicated years of service to the timber industry and the Yarram community.
Council understands that the decision to close the site was influenced by challenges in the construction sector and rising operating costs. Importantly, Council notes that the AKD Yarram leadership team was not involved in making this decision.
Council encourages AKD to continue to go above and beyond to support staff through redeployment opportunities and transitional training during this difficult time.
Wellington Shire Council Mayor Cindy Madeley said the closure was heartbreaking news for the community.
“We share the pain and uncertainty this brings and will do everything we can to support affected workers and their families, especially with this news coming so close to Christmas” Cr Madeley said.
“We are pushing the State Government to provide appropriate levels of support for the families affected. We will advocate strongly for opportunities for economic diversification and are willing to talk to prospective industry investors to determine interest in the site.
“Our communities are strong and resilient, Council as always, will continue to stand beside Yarram and our broader region to ensure that it remains a vibrant place to live and work.”
