Wellington Shire Council is currently undertaking blackberry control works on roadsides in the Macalister Irrigation District, Gippsland Lakes and Dargo areas as part of its ongoing Roadside Weed Control Program.

Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus aggregate) is a highly invasive introduced species which threatens agricultural and environmental values in the region.

The control program across roadsides in Wellington Shire will assist in the reduction of spread of blackberry into adjacent farmland and conservation areas, helping to protect key agricultural resources and important natural assets.

There has been extensive growth of blackberry across Wellington Shire due to high rainfall throughout last year. Council is responding to this by increasing its control efforts.

Blackberry infestations will continue to be monitored throughout summer.

For more information about roadside blackberry control, contact Council's Land and Natural Resources Coordinator on 1300 366 244.
