Local man sentenced on 155 charges against animals

Wellington Shire Council is pleased at the outcome of today’s court hearing against Bertram Cooke relating to illegal dog breeding activities.

The offender pleaded guilty and was convicted of 155 charges against the following Acts:

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act

Domestic Animals Act

Local Government Act

Wellington Shire Local Law

Wellington Shire Council had sought a custodial sentence given the severity of the charges.

However, Magistrate Higgins ordered Mr Cooke pay $13,000 in costs to Wellington Shire Council, a 10 year banning order prohibiting him from owning dogs, and a 10 year monitoring order.

A forfeiture order was also issued for both dog trailers to be destroyed along with all contents, which were seized during the raid.

Mr Cooke was given a 12 month community corrections order and ordered to perform 150 hours of work in the community.
