If you suspect you may have the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) please call the dedicated hotline on 1800 675 398. Please keep Triple Zero (000) for emergencies only.

The Department of Health and Human Services website provides information and guidance about the current outbreak of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) including:

As this is a rapidly changing situation, please visit their website for regular updates.

Social Distancing

Social distancing helps stop or slow the spread of infectious diseases. It means less contact between you and other people. Please note stage three restrictions are now in place, you can learn more here.

Social distancing is important because COVID-19 is most likely to spread from person-to-person through:

  • Direct close contact with a person while they are infectious or in the 24 hours before their symptoms appeared
  • Close contact with a person with a confirmed infection who coughs or sneezes
  • Touching objects or surfaces (such as door handles or tables) contaminated from a cough or sneeze from a person with a confirmed infection, and then touching your mouth or face.

What can you do?

  • Keep a distance of 1.5 metres from other people
  • Avoid shaking hands, hugging, or kissing other people.
  • Avoid visiting vulnerable people, such as those in aged care facilities or hospitals, infants, or people with compromised immune systems due to illness or medical treatment.

Ten ways to reduce your risk of coronavirus

  1. Distance yourself from others – approx. 1.5m away. Avoid handshaking, hugs and kisses.
  2. Stay at home unless it is absolutely necessary.
  3. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  4. Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue
  5. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  6. Buy alcohol-based hand sanitiser with > 60& alcohol
  7. Clean and disinfect used surfaces and objects frequently
  8. Phone your doctor or the hotline (1800 675 398) if you need medical attention.
  9. Continue health habits: exercise, drink water, get plenty of sleep.
  10. Wearing a face mask is not necessary if you’re well.

Physical distancing and visiting your GP Clinic or Hospital

All medical facilities are now advising clients to call the clinic or hospital to make an appointment.

Do not expect to be seen by a doctor if you have not followed these procedures.

Many appointments are now being offered over the phone or by video conference.

Vulnerable Persons Register

What is the Vulnerable Persons Register?

The Vulnerable Persons Register is a cloud-based database which is made available to Victoria Police who have responsibilities for helping vulnerable residents evacuate in a bushfire. (Established as a recommendation from the 2010 Bushfire Royal Commission).

The register is not for monitoring the general health and wellbeing of individuals.  Individuals or family members cannot self-refer to the register.

What advice can I give to someone to be included on the register?

Advice should be given to contact their local health or NDIS service provider for an assessment.

Agencies follow a strict eligibility screening process for inclusion on the Vulnerable persons’ register when clients do not have personal or community support networks to help them in an emergency.

If the agency assesses the client as eligible for the register they are then responsible for supporting that client on the register.

What is Council’s role?

Council’s role is to provide basic system administration, troubleshooting and local oversight of the registers in consultation with relevant support agencies.  Council maintains the register in accordance with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Vulnerable Persons policy.

If people want further information contact the Wellington Shire Council Vulnerable Persons Officer on 1300 366 244.
