Parks and Gardens

Council is responsible for the management, design and development of parks, gardens, playgrounds and open space in urban areas.

This includes approximately 320 hectares of parkland and associated infrastructure, such as picnic shelters, BBQs, seating, boardwalks, fences and public toilets and also the proactive management of approx. 30,000 - 35,000 urban trees.

Council is also responsible for moving the Wellington community towards a more sustainable future, and strives to ensure that Wellington's natural environment and landscape is clean, diverse, beautiful, accessible and protected as per our Wellington 2030 Vision.

Wellington's Parks and Gardens are actively promoted through our annual Parks Week celebrations which are held in March each year, attracting in excess of 5,000 visitors at various locations across the municipality.
