| Gippsland Water supplies water to domestic and commercial clients within the Wellington Shire and surrounding areas. They manage approximately 100 water storage basins, a number of them located within Wellington Shire. A number of bores are located on the Boisdale aquifer and a small location near Freestone Creek.
Water supplies also come from the Macalister River via Maffra’s water treatment plant in addition to Moondarra Reserve via the Tyers water treatment plant. Other reliable sources of water come from the Thomson River, Lake Glenmaggie, and Merriman’s creek.
West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority is responsible for waterway and catchment management across the south-east corner of Victoria. Their purpose is to protect and enhance the water quality and water resources while maintaining and improving the health and flow of the regions water.
Southern Rural Water (SRW) is a statutory rural water authority established under the provisions of the Water Act 2007. SRW is responsible for the supply of rural water across the southern part of Victoria. Customers are principally farmers, graziers and growers. However, SRW also supply water in bulk to non metropolitan urban water authorities and power generators.
Three irrigation districts are managed by SRW; the most prominent is the Macalister Irrigation District which provides water to pastures and crops to the townships and surrounding areas of Heyfield, Maffra, Sale, Stratford and Briagalong. SRW manage and control the use of water from the rivers and bores while also harvesting and storing water for farmers and organisations. | |
