| The timber industry in Wellington Shire has made significant impacts on the economy with many timber products being exported to overseas markets.
Wellington Shire’s timber production comes a number of sources, the largest source being native forests found across the Shire. These native public forests are managed by the Department of Sustainability and Environment and VicForests and produce a large percentage of Gippsland’s timber production.
Wellington's remaining timber is sourced from hardwood eucalyptus and softwood pine plantations and preservation plants which are located near Sale, Longford, Yarram and Gelliondale.
Approximately two thirds of Gippsland’s softwood plantations are located in Wellington Shire, as a result of affordable land prices and land suitability. Approximately a quarter of Gippsland’s hardwood plantations are in Wellington Shire.
Wellington’s softwood, hardwood and preservation plantations supply pulp logs, saw logs and preservation logs for local processing and chip exportation. Local sawmills manufacture truss and frame materials, soft and hard wood pallets and landscape and potting mixture for the region.
Wellington Shire's plantations are managed by private companies such as Grand Ridge Plantations, a subsidiary company of Hancock Timber Resource Group. | |
