| Victoria’s commercial fishing industry is one of the largest employers in regional coastal areas across Victoria.
Approximately 14.0 per cent of Wellington Shire residents employed are in the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sector, the largest industry employer in the shire.
Commercial fishing in Victoria involves fishing for mussels, abalone, ornamental fish, fresh water salmonids and warm water inland fish.
Aquaculture is a major industry for Gippsland with Wellington Shire hosting a number of fishing operations within the region. Small fishing fleets operate from Port Albert catching abalone, southern rock lobster, teleosts, scallop and Chondrichthyans.
Gippsland Ports maintains the waterways and provides information such as navigation guides, access to facilities, boating zone information and the locality of jetties.
There are a number of other fishing operators currently working within the shire which consist of carp and eel fishing. A $2 million eel farming operation in Stratford exports live eels to Asia. Up to 90 tonnes are exported annually with a value of approximately $700 000. A small number or eels are also smoked for the domestic gourmet market.
K&C Fisheries, located in Sale, specialise in frozen carp with exporting targets exceeding 1000 tonnes with 70 per cent of production being sent to the Middle East and Europe and 30 per cent sold to the domestic market. Operating eight vessels, 5 vehicles and specialist machinery, K&C fisheries employs up to 18 staff and is the largest carp harvesting and processing company in the southern hemisphere. | .jpg) |
