Physical Activity Strategy

The Physical Activity Strategy for the Wellington Shire was adopted by Council on October 19 2010.

This project provides a Strategic Plan for Council to enable more people to be physically active more often. It examines ways to increase participation in physical activity relative to the influence of local government.

There are a range of contributors to the quality, access and range of physical activity opportunities. Community organisations, local residents, the private sector and other levels of government all have a role to play. As such, much of this strategy is about positioning Council within the context of a whole of community effort to building an environment that maximises opportunity for all people to participate. Local organisations have been part of a reference group to put the Strategy together and a wider cross section will be involved in the implementation plan.

The Physical Activity Strategy was prepared by CPG Consultants who worked with the community to gain an understanding of;
• Physical activity participation levels
• Current programs, facilities, parks and open space supporting physical activity in the Shire
• Information about Physical Activity
• Trails for walking and cycling

The information within the Strategy was gained from:
• Six hundred and sixty - six household surveys completed by Shire residents (a total of 20,000 were sent out)
• Seven community forums held in locations across the Shire
• Thirteen informant interviews with representatives from a range of organisations across the Shire

Aims of the Physical Activity Strategy:
• Engage the public more in open spaces via events and activities in the park;
• Help people to know and understand what is already on offer in the Shire in relation to opportunities for physical activity, such as destinations and clubs;
• Engage ‘hard to reach’ groups
• Strengthen partnerships, learning and delivering (between facilities and programs)
• Encourage welcoming and inclusive sporting clubs
• Achieve greater connectivity of paths and trails
• Create policy directions such as priorities, inter connectedness, strategies and goals
• Make a difference to people’s lives in Wellington Shire
