| Election Dates Under the Local Government (Democratic Reform) Act 2003, ordinary council elections are conducted in November and will be held on a four yearly basis from 2008. The last election for Wellington Shire Council was held on 26 November 2005. All Victorian councils will go to election in November 2008.

Councillors The council is comprised of nine councillors elected to represent an unsubdivided municipality. A Representation Review conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission in 2004 determined that this structure should remain.
A Mayor is elected by the council at a Special Meeting held in November or December each year. Councillor allowances for the forthcoming year are also set at this time.
Voting for Council The council's last three elections have been conducted via postal vote by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) on the Council's behalf following a tender process for this work.
