Council Elections

Election Dates
Under the Local Government (Democratic Reform) Act 2003, ordinary council elections are conducted in November and will be held on a four yearly basis from 2008. The last election for Wellington Shire Council was held on 26 November 2005. All Victorian councils will go to election in November 2008.

For information about Wellington Shire Council’s next election including enrolling and candidate information, visit Wellington Shire Council Elections on the Victorian Electoral Commission website.

Councillors
The council is comprised of nine councillors elected to represent an unsubdivided municipality. A Representation Review conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission in 2004 determined that this structure should remain.

A Mayor is elected by the council at a Special Meeting held in November or December each year. Councillor allowances for the forthcoming year are also set at this time.

Voting for Council
The council's last three elections have been conducted via postal vote by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) on the Council's behalf following a tender process for this work.

Enquiries by ratepayers, residents or other members of the public concerning eligibility to vote in council elections may be made by contacting us on 1300 366 244.

Nominating for Council
For resources and information about becoming a councillor, visit the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) website. The MAV have produced a booklet called Citizen to Councillor - A guide for prospective councillors which is a useful resource for those wishing to run for council.

Information for women considering nominating for council can be accessed by visiting the Women's Participation in Local Government Coalition website.

Candidates in council elections also have certain obligations under the Local Government Act (1989). Please refer to the 'Campaign Donation Guidlines' for rules and responsibilities regarding campaign donations.
