| Building permits are designed to ensure a building is structurally sound and does not adversely affect the safety of the public or occupiers. Building permits require a series of checks to be made to a building to ensure that the construction meets guidelines as stipulated by local, state and federal government regulations.
Changes to the Building Regulations 2006 has amended the previous exemptions granted to owners to obtain a building permit in certain circumstances. These generally are now amended for minor alterations and smaller structures.
The Building Act 1993 and the Regulations state that building work must not be commenced prior to the issue of a building permit. The Act prescribes a penalty of $10,000 for any work done without a permit.
