| The Shire of Wellington contains some of the most ecologically important areas within the State of Victoria. Covering an area of about 11,000 square kilometres, it is Victoria's third largest Shire, extending from the Great Dividing Range and Victoria's High Country in the north through rich irrigated flats, productive agricultural and horticultural land, the internationally significant Gippsland Lakes and Wetlands to National and Coastal Parks, the Ninety Mile Beach and Bass Strait, providing intrinsic natural values which are a significant factor in attracting people to reside in and tourists to visit the Shire.
Wellington Shire Planning recognises the importance of its natural assets. Hence, Council’s Environmental Service is committed to protecting and enhancing the environment in accordance with the objectives and goals outlined in numerous Acts, Strategies and Policies. The service provides frequent and ongoing environmental advice and develops various environmental programs and initiatives to enhance the Shire’s natural environment in cooperation with the community that depends on it.
