Sharps Disposal

Sharps Disposal and Needle and Syringe Program (NSP)

Wellington Shire Council’s Environmental Health Officers are responsible for sharps disposal throughout the shire.

In our role to prevent the spread of blood borne viruses (such as AIDS or Hepatitis C) within the community we provide a free sharps disposal service for residents with diabetes or similar medical conditions that require the disposal of used sharps/infectious waste.

You can obtain Environment Protection Authority (EPA) approved sharps containers free of charge from either the Sale Service Centre or Yarram Service Centre. Return full containers to these locations for a new empty container. When returning sharps containers please ensure that the lid is securely in place.

Customer service staff will not accept sharps in any other form than in an approved sealed sharps container.

Free sharps containers are also available 24 hours a day from Central Gippsland Health Service and from participating pharmacies in Sale. Full details of these are shown on the health.vic website on their NSP outlet map.

Commercial premises, such as tattooists and medical centres requiring disposal of used sharps and infectious waste, can purchase sharps containers from medical suppliers and an arrangement made with a similar company for the regular disposal.

Do not place used sharps and infectious waste into general rubbish. If you find used sharps on your property or in a public area, please contact the Environmental Health Office on 1300 366 244 to arrange their collection. This sharps collection service is also available through our after hours service.

Please contact Central Gippsland Health Services on 03 5143 8600 or Yarram District Health Service on 03 5182 0222 for information on sharps disposal for intravenous drug users. Both these services are committed to harm minimisation within the community and operate a NSP which offers equipment and advice to promote the safe use of clean needles.
