In the 200 years since J.M.W. Turner rose to fame, his images of land, sea and sky scapes have lost none of their electrifying intensity.
In his lifetime Turner travelled extensively throughout Europe, particularly after the end of the Napoleonic Wars. All the while he prolifically produced images of landscapes and towns.
The Turner Gallery, acquired by the Gallery in 2013, was first published in 1875 after the artist’s death, and includes 120 fine steel engravings after some of Turner’s most popular images. The extensive collection ranges from views and landscapes in Great Britain, Germany and Italy, to studies of ships, mythical scenes and panoramas from classical Rome.
