Gallery Exhibition (Maffra) - Nicole Moorhouse - Expectations

Dates & Times

Thursday 27 July to Monday 18 September 2017, open during Gallery hours

Moorhouse is a contemporary painter who expresses her fascination with the ‘found object’ through her love of painting. These collected and documented objects have been discarded and exposed to the elements and no longer function as intended. Moorhouse says,

“The patina of the reclamation process of nature leaves intricate and unique markings upon a variety of surfaces and materials to create an aesthetic value that draws me to these objects and ultimately the process of art making.”

Expectations is an exhibition that combines some of Moorhouse’s earlier work with new pieces that have been completed since graduating from studies. Moorhouse says,

“The title refers to the many expectations that we all face as we strive to achieve our individual goals, but it also refers to the expectations we as an audience have of an artwork and the way it functions.”

Moorhouse aims to remove these expectations by allowing the audience to decipher that which is before them based on their own understanding and interpretations of form and colour. Through intricate repetitious compositions and rendering forms in paint Moorhouse creates no expectations but instead an experience of the world around us.

Born in Victoria in 1988 Nicole Moorhouse commenced a Bachelor of Visual and Media Arts at Monash University at the Gippsland Centre of Design (GCAD) in 2007 completed in 2009, in 2011 she returned to GCAD to complete a of Bachelor of Visual Arts Honours. In 2013, Moorhouse held a solo exhibition titled Time and Resurrection, at Arc Yinnar. Returning to GCAD in 2014, now under the Federation University banner she commenced a Master of Visual Arts, 2014 also saw Moorhouse the successful recipient of the Dick Bishop Memorial Prize which resulted in a solo exhibition Artefacts of Aesthetic at the Latrobe Regional Gallery in Morwell.
